Bracelets that make a positive difference

What Tigers are we saving?
Around the world, tigers in the wild are losing their race for survival. Poached for their value in commercial products, and displaced by industrial growth, tigers are literally on the run.

Poaching?
Poaching to feed consumer demand for tiger body parts, mostly for use in traditional Asian medicines and folk remedies. In New Delhi, India, poaching and trade in endangered animals like the tiger is on the rise. As a result, the government has decided to make the Wildlife Protection Act more stringent by increasing the penal provisions. It is also strengthening the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau to rein in on poachers. In fact, the government has proposed a number of amendments to the existing Wild Life (Protection) Act of 1972 to increase penal provisions and incorporate provisions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species to give more teeth to the law, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said at a meeting of National Board of Wildlife here on Wednesday. The proposed penal provisions include increasing the imprisonment terms up to 7 years and raising the limits of fine up to 50 lakh.

Deforestation
As more and more forests are cleared for paper and palm oil, tiger habitat disappears daily. The tigers are driven out of their habitat and have no where to live, and hence die out. Additionally, their prey is also driven out, so there is nothling left for the tigers to eat. As a result, tigers often resort to hunting and eating human prey once their prey disappears. This causes many unnecessary lives to be taken — especially helpless villagers living in rural areas.
